"MISSING LINK" FOUND: New Fossil Links Humans, Lemurs?

SHARE
RELATED

May 19, 2009—Meet "Ida," the small "missing link" found in Germany that's created a big media splash and will likely continue to make waves among those who study human origins.

In a new book, documentary, and promotional Web site, paleontologist Jorn Hurum, who led the team that analyzed the 47-million-year-old fossil seen above, suggests Ida is a critical missing-0link species in primate evolution.

The fossil, he says, bridges the evolutionary split between higher primates such as monkeys, apes, and humans and their more distant relatives such as lemurs.

"This is the first link to all humans," Hurum, of the Natural History Museum in Oslo, Norway, said in a statement. Ida represents "the closest thing we can get to a direct ancestor."

Ida, properly known as Darwinius masillae, has a unique anatomy. The lemur-like skeleton features primate-like characteristics, including grasping hands, opposable thumbs, clawless digits with nails, and relatively short limbs.

"This specimen looks like a really early fossil monkey that belongs to the group that includes us," said Brian Richmond, a biological anthropologist at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., who was not involved in the study.

But there's a big gap in the fossil record from this time period, Richmond noted. Researchers are unsure when and where the primate group that includes monkeys, apes, and humans split from the other group of primates that includes lemurs.

"[Ida] is one of the important branching points on the evolutionary tree," Richmond said, "but it's not the only branching point."

At least one aspect of Ida is unquestionably unique: her incredible preservation, unheard of in specimens from the Eocene era, when early primates underwent a period of rapid evolution. (Explore a prehistoric time line.)

"From this time period there are very few fossils, and they tend to be an isolated tooth here or maybe a tailbone there," Richmond explained. "So you can't say a whole lot of what that [type of fossil] represents in terms of evolutionary history or biology."

In Ida's case, scientists were able to examine fossil evidence of fur and soft tissue and even picked through the remains of her last meal: fruits, seeds, and leaves.

What's more, the newly described "missing link" was found in Germany's Messel Pit. Ida's European origins are intriguing, Richmond said, because they could suggest—contrary to common assumptions—that the continent was an important area for primate evolution.

Face Pain.

Some may have noticed that I have not been so active of late.
The reason behind this is the condition " Neuralgia"

A vicious pain that leaves the sufferer with a feeling like
they have just been kicked in the side of their face by a horse.

Then there are the cluster headaches
like little bombs exploding on the surface of your scalp.

The medication I must take to ease this very severe pain
leaves me drowsy and ill humoured.

So, if you have have not heard from me for a while,
then rest assured I am not ignoring you.

Thank You all who visit this place
it would mean nothing without you.

Shall catch up with you all,
in time.

Best wishes
Kenny

Gone fishing.

Easter Sunday
Good Cod almighty.

It had been some time since we had been out fishing, waiting for favourable conditions
was frustrating to say the least.
But Sunday promised fine weather and we were not disappointed when it dawned,
sunny mild and windless. Perfect conditions for a spot of fishing.

Slipping out of Paddys hole into the River Tees,
we were dwarfed by a tanker fully three times the length of a football pitch.
Although I love the sea, I have never felt the inclination to take to her on one of these floating worlds.
It is just not the same as sitting with your hand in the water, as you glide across the mirror like surface.
Making little ripples with your fingertips.

Soon we reached the fishing grounds, with hardly a breath of wind and as silent as the grave.
We dropped our lines and settled down to some hopefully successful fishing.
We were not disappointed, when after only a  short time my finger detected a
slight tremble on the line. Just enough to tell me that something some 200ft below on the sea bed
was interested in the bait.
A moment later whatever it was, took the bait. Suddenly the slight tremor that ran through the line,
now became a violent shudder. Telling me instantly that he was hooked.
It evokes such a carnivorous emotion, when the energy of the fish travels up the line from the depths,
into the rod  so into myself.

As I reeled him up, his thrashing and tugging became less violent .
Some 20ft below the surface, a flash of silvery white,
told me this night I would be eating freshly caught Cod for my supper.

I was not wrong as by the end of the day we had landed 8 fine specimens of North sea Cod.
All in all a fine days fishing and I can't wait to get out there again.

Indeed there is something very special about the motion of the ocean.
It makes some people sick. But, to me it sings, it dances and sways to the rhythm of Nature.
But as with all women she has her moods and must be respected,
we ignore  gathering storm clouds, at our peril !

Evolution

The Chimpanzee

 and the Bonobo.

I truly believe that man has evolved from a common ancestor between These two animals.

Eventually evolving into who we are today. A Male dominant,

aggressive, human like animal, with a high sex drive.

Below is a simple description of the characteristics Nature choose

should successfully evolve and which should not.

Photobucket      Photobucket

          The Chimp.            The Bonobo.

Male dominant. J                                          Female dominant. :(

  Highly aggressive.  J                                                          Passive. :(

Ape like. :(                                                                  Human like. J

Low sex drive. :(                                                       High sex drive. J

Nature has taken 50% of the characteristics of both animals
(with the most likelihood of succeeding)
 to produce you and I

Now, supposing an animal displaying the remaining characteristics,
should have successfully
evolved and survived to this day.
Then !  the question may be.  "Would life really have been worth living" ?

"HO"  MAN... DID NATURE GET YOU RIGHT.

This is one of the reasons I love her.

Read on. ( hope this link is not missing)

HAVE A SAFE AND JOYFUL EASTER EVERYONE.

Reality or fantasy

“Once upon a time, I, Kenny, dreamt I was a Wolf, running free hither and thither,
to all intents and purposes a Wolf.
I was conscious only of my happiness as a Wolf, unaware that I was Kenny.
Soon I awakened, and there I was, veritably myself again.

Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a Wolf,
or whether I am now a Wolf, dreaming I am a man.

Update "AGE............GAP "

Update
" Age................Gap "

Some time ago I blogged about a friend of mine that had been contacted by a very pretty lady.
She was much younger than himself and  this fact alone caused him much concern.
However,  he has now told me  that they have recently met and enjoyed 3 days together. BUT !

It appears  that this lady has a  "male friend"  that visits her often in her home town and
text's her on her mobile.  One night he text her at nearly 2am.
The alarm bells began to ring, he Say's.

My friend and I sat late into the night discussing this problem. He can not accept the fact that
there is another man in her life, that she calls a "friend"
He views this man as a threat to any future happiness, that may have been theirs as a couple.
Two is company three is a crowd, he Say's.
He is very much attracted to the lady and would have loved to have built a deep and meaningful
relationship with her. But, is scared stiff that it would only lead to heartache.

So, my question is.........Is he right or wrong to turn his back on the possibility of a happy future with this lady,
because of her relationship with this man ?
